Description
Operation Duration Extender for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) ORNL UT-B ID: 201904459 Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a commercialization partner for a technical business opportunity entitled, Operation Duration Extender for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The technology integrates several ORNL wireless charging concepts, including the Oak Ridge Converter. The objective of the invention is to overcome the current limitations of flight range for UAVs (i.e. drones) by introducing wireless charging systems to recharge batteries. Wireless charging technology is very well suited for charging drones because it does not require any physical electrical contact and thereby not hampered by environmental factors or dependent on physical contact mechanisms. A practicable wireless power transfer system tailored to extend UAV flight range is available to enhance the flight time of UAVs for plethora of applications. There is a critical need for a convenient and practicable way of extending flight range and time without having the requirement to land for plug-in charging, and wireless power transfer-based solution is ideally suited to realize this approach. ORNL is a demonstrated leader in both static and dynamic wireless charging systems for EVs and other applications. The Oak Ridge Converter demonstrates 1/3rd the power electronics mass, volume, and cost with no compromise in performance. This technology provides wireless charging for drones and charging from stations that can be established easily on power lines, transformer substations, and street lighting posts. With this novel wireless charging power converter technology drones can be charged more efficiently. The charging approach can increase the durations of drones flight time, since they can get charged from a station near where they operate, instead of going back to a base for overnight charging. The invention comprises a 1 MHz single-phase Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) AC/DC wireless power transfer (WPT) system that is introduced for unmanned air vehicle (UAV) charging applications. The advanced solution eliminates the design, weight, volume, and the cost of the power factor correcting (PFC) front-end rectifier compared to the conventional practices. Additionally, grid power quality requirements can be achieved with the presented innovative idea. With this method, single stage WPT primary side uses the hybrid grid frequency and high frequency (60 Hz and 1 MHZ) from ac source through the coupler coils and to UAV battery with GaN FETs. Experimental results of the single-phase system is presented to confirm the mathematical analyses with the source voltage of 110 V AC RMS and output voltage of 40 VDC at 1 kW power with 6 inches air gap between couplers. The primary coupler consists of a ferrite-backed single-turn coil with a radius of 1.5 ft, and the secondary coupler is made with an air-core single-turn coil with radius of 1.2 ft. The system overall ac to dc efficiency is measured 77% acquiring 0.99 power factor (PF) and 3.3% current total harmonic distortion (THD) at 1 kW power. The global drone market was estimated at $14 billion in 2018 and is expected to grow to over $43 billion by 2024 at a CAGR of 20.5%. Applications: Package and food delivery. Power line inspection. Global security and defense. Advantages: Significant reduction in fuel consumption Faster turnaround time Improved operational efficiency Cost benefit This promising technology business opportunity was selected as a participant in the ORNL Technology Innovation Program (TIP). TIP is a royalty-funded technology maturation program designed to accelerate the commercial adoption of high commercial potential ORNL inventions. Moreover, the ORNL Technology Transfer Office is making this technology available to industry and is now accepting licensing applications from interested parties through July 15, 2022 to engage in commercializing this business opportunity. Prospective licensees are invited to attend the ORNL TIP Showcase on June 6, 2022, which will feature technical presentations and laboratory tours to learn more about this technology opportunity. Technology Innovation Program: This technology was originally developed using federal funds and selected for further development under the laboratory's Technology Innovation Program (TIP). TIP supports technology development using royalties from existing technology licenses to accelerate the market readiness of high potential technologies. If your organization is interested in exploiting this technology, we encourage you to do so via a licensing agreement. ORNL is accepting licensing applications for review from all interested parties, and license applications will be evaluated based on prospective partners' ability and commitment to successfully commercialize the technology. Said licensing applications once received will be competitively review. Candidates with promising applications will be selected to negotiate licensing agreements. If a license is executed, the ORNL researchers developing the technology will be eligible to compete for additional TIP funding to assist in transferring the technology to any licensees. Timeline: May 2, 2022 Announcement of TIP day via email solicitations and posting to ORNL website. June 6, 2022 TIP Day at Oak Ridge National Laboratory interested parties can come to ORNL for a conference wherein presentations are given by all inventors further highlighting the licensing opportunities, laboratory visits will be possible demonstrating the technologies, and breakout sessions will be available with commercialization/licensing associates. July 15, 2022 Deadline for receipt of licensing applications. August 15, 2022 Notice of selection of candidates invited to license.
