Description
The Liquid Helium Recapture System must have the following capabilities: Liquid Helium Recapture: The recapture system ideally will recapture LHe that is boiling off super conducting NMR magnets as well as recapture LHe lost during transfers/fill of the magnets. The minimum recapture percentage will be greater than or equal to 70%. Ideally, the recapture would be closer to 90-95%. The volume of storage capability is unknown at this point as NREL has not yet settled on the pressure/size of the holding tanks. However, overall NREL would like the ability to hold the equivalent of ~100-150L of LHe. The pressure needs to be regulated in such a way that there wont be damage to the magnet by backflow/backpressure. The system and components must be positioned in a way that stray magnetic fields dont have an effect. Floor space within existing NMR Facility is approximately 6ft by 5ft with access to both power and chilled water. There is additional linear wall space near ceiling in at least two spots for capture balloon/bag. Liquification: Must have the ability to compress, purify and liquify gaseous helium for reuse. LHe needs to be stored in a castored dewar for ease of movement. Dewar itself is no larger than 100L. System should accommodate external helium gas. For example, other local universities/labs may capture helium and compress into 2,200 psi high pressure cylinders, ship to NREL, and request liquification into 60L or 100L dewars. LHe plant therefore must be capable of disconnecting from internal system and accepting external gas cylinders as source to be liquified.
