Description
The project will provide the conversion of the NSF Carderock Underground Storage Tank (UST) Farm to an Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) Farm. The current USTs are integrated and not separate therefore one tank replacement impacts the entire system. During the construction of this project, the current storage tanks will be down and mission impacts have been coordinated. The ASTs will serve the same purpose as the USTs. The project shall include the removal of all USTs, including their associated sumps, product and vent lines, conduits, hazmat materials and catholic protection systems. Six underground storage tanks will be demolished. Five tanks are double walled epoxy lined steel containing oily waste with the following capacities: two 20,000-gallon tanks; two 2,500- gallon tanks; and one 1,500-gallon tank. The one remaining tank is protected double walled epoxy lined steel containing fresh seawater with a capacity of 10,000 gallons. Tanks and all associated piping will be emptied, cleaned, inerted, and removed from the site. The associated cathodic protection system as well as the concrete pads above the tanks must also be demolished. All traces of petroleum oil within the tanks will be removed by the contractor. The project will include the site improvements needed to prepare the site for installation of the ASTs as well as the ASTs, appurtenances, and equipment. The ASTs will be compatible with and connected to the existing piping in the lab. This project will reduce the environmental reporting required by the mission. The foundations for the new tanks, pumps and pipe supports will be reinforced concrete slabs on top of a graded crushed aggregate base course. Each slab foundation will support three tanks with reinforced concrete piers under the tank saddles. The steel pipe supports will be founded on a thickened reinforced concrete slab between the tanks or a reinforced concrete pad, depending on the support location. The pipe supports will be spaced as required to support the necessary size piping. This project will use shop -fabricated, double walled ASTs with interstitial leak detection. The tanks will comply and be listed under UL 142, Aboveground Secondarily Contained Storage Tanks for Combustible Liquids. New piping systems will be aboveground stainless steel. Piping system will penetrate the Bldg. 60 laboratory wall and will connect to the existing piping located within the laboratory. The new tanks are aboveground, power is required for additional equipment and accessories, including product pumps, tank area lighting, service receptacles, and heat trace circuits for the aboveground piping. The adjacent lab space within Building 60 contains many panel boards with both 480Y/277V and 208Y/120V power available. The tank system would be to provide a single 480V feeder to the tank area and set a mini power zone (transformer plus load center) to distribute power to the tank farm
