BACKGROUND INFORMATION The National Institute of Standards and Technologys Fire Fighting Technology Group within Engineering Laboratorys Fire Research Division enables advances in fire fighter safety, fire ground operations, and effectiveness of the fire service; develops and applies technology, measurements, and standards, and improves the understanding of the behavior, prevention and control of fires to enhance fire-fighting operations and equipment, fire suppression, fire investigations, and disaster response. Many projects within the Fire Research Division require a gas analyzer to measure oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Applications of these analyzers include analyzing species concentrations of extracted gas samples from fire experiments and estimating heat release rate via oxygen consumption calorimetry. To fulfill its mission, the Fire Research Division requires an in-situ gas analyzer so that it may build upon its prowess in measuring gas species concentrations in various applications. Applications include analyzing species concentrations of extracted gas samples from fire experiments and estimating heat release rate via oxygen consumption calorimetry.
