Description

NHTSA has identified an emerging issue resulting from societal changes in public perceptions of traffic enforcement. To address this issue, NHTSA has identified a need for a training curriculum for law enforcement officers focused on traffic safety, equity, and procedural justice. When a law enforcement officer makes a traffic stop for a dangerous driving behavior such as impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, or a seat belt violation, that officer is potentially saving lives and making the road safer for everyone. Traffic stops for other serious moving violations, such as reckless driving and failing to obey a traffic signal, contribute to saving lives, preventing injuries, and reducing traffic crashes. The proposed training curriculum will demonstrate the value of traffic enforcement and the important role traffic stops play in saving lives and improving public safety on our roadways. It will emphasize equity and procedural justice as foundational elements. For the purpose of this project, equity will be defined as �the consistent and systematic fair, just, and impartial treatment of all individuals, including individuals who belong to underserved communities that have been denied such treatment.� The goals of this project are to: to develop and distribute a two (2) hour web-based training curriculum divided into two (2) modules with one (1) hour focused on equity and one (1) focused on procedural justice in relation to a traffic stop. Incorporate the trainings into the Elevate Blue suite of trainings offered to law enforcement.
