- Description
- This effort will address a technical gap in the existing scientific instrumentation available to gather, quantify, analyze, and characterize data derived from the intermediate-scale impact testing of energetic materials. Historically, energetic materials (explosives) have only been tested against mechanical insults at the small-scale: less than one 1 gram. Tests do exist for these materials at the very large scale (several kilograms), but those tests were designed for consolidated articles such as boxes of material or machined warheads and not for the actual energetic materials themselves in an unadulterated state. Often a larger amount of material will behave differently than a very small amount when subjected to external stimuli. Such differences in behavior may result from a pile of powder, for example, being capable of diffusing an impact whereas a single crystal can only fracture rather than be pushed away. The Instrument must be capable of analyzing the effect of impact-based energy on a 100-gram sample size of energetic material.
