- Technical Questions Due: 8/28/2023 12:00 p.m. Mountain Time Proposal Dues: 9/11/2023 12:00 p.m. Mountain Time Synopsis: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a national laboratory owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). NREL is the only federal laboratory dedicated to research, development, commercialization, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL is managed and operated for DOEs Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy by The Alliance for Sustainable Energy (Alliance), the M&O Contractor. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) consists of over 630 acres and 50+ buildings that range in age from new construction to 40+ years old. NREL takes pride in its world-class research, talented staff, sustainable campus and results that positively impact our local, national and global communities. On the NREL sites there are state-of-the-art facilities available to industry entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, and universities for researching and developing their energy technologies. NREL maintains multiple sites in the Denver metropolitan area related to renewable energy research and development in the following areas: Renewable Fuels Biomass, hydrogen and fuel cells, and vehicle technologies Renewable Electricity Solar, wind, water, geothermal, smart-grid technology, and building technology and efficiency Energy Science Chemical and biosciences, scientific computing, and materials science Research and development activities are generally bench-scale in nature and include solar cell fabrication, testing, and characterization, organic and inorganic chemistry, microbiology-related enzyme and yeast recombinant methods, and biofuels testing and characterization. Pilot-scale activities include biomass-derived ethanol production, biomass-derived syngas and chemical intermediates production, and heavy-duty engine testing. NREL facilities currently generate: hazardous, non-hazardous, universal, medical, bioprospecting, and other regulated wastes requiring proper management. Waste streams primarily consist of labpacks, drummed waste, palletized material, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos, medical clinic waste, chemically contaminated articles, chemically contaminated laboratory equipment, batteries of various sizes and chemistry, and empty containers. Requisite disposal methods include incineration, treatment, landfill, reclaim, and recycling. NREL is looking for a Subcontractor to provide for the proper packaging, documentation, transportation, and off-site disposal and/or recycling of waste items in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. NREL South Table Mountain is registered as a Small Quantity Generator (which can episodically generate Large Quantity Generator volumes of hazardous waste) and all other facilities are Very Small Quantity Generators with both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
