Description

The National Science Foundation requires CGCA training to inform NSF program officers and panelists on the effects implicit bias can have on peer review evaluations. NSF�s �review community� is responsible for nearly 240,000 reviews a year, as a result NSF funds approximately 20% of all federally supported research conducted at academic institutions. This training program is a professional development resource that seeks to ameliorate bias and its role in marginalizing proposing researchers from underrepresented backgrounds, less-resourced institutions, or whose scholarship incorporates non-traditional approaches to science.� This is to be achieved through an IRRTTA program which is grounded in a comprehensive and research-based description of the dynamics of merit-review discussions and their vulnerabilities, combined with practical advice and strategies for avoiding, navigating, or mitigating these pitfalls. �This requirement calls for training materials for all panel participants, multi-year training and development for a cadre of Panel Fellows, and training and development for Program Directors, which will ultimately result in a more robust agenda for recognizing and fostering innovation in research.
