Description
Amendment P0001 provides answers to questions received. Question 1: What is the Liquid Scintillation Cocktail? Answer: We used Ecolume as our liquid scintillation cocktail. SDS attached. Question 2: Are there just Vials in the drums or is there non vial waste such as contact waste of dry waste? Answer: Liquid waste barrels contain only liquid. All vials were dumped into the liquid waste barrels. To the best of our knowledge there is no solid waste material in the liquid waste barrels. Question 3: Liquid Waste LW4 contains several compounds that do not normally carry a D001 code. The only item listed as having Acetonitrile is the Malachite green. Can you confirm information on the Eugenol and Isoeugenol as generator knowledge or based on actual confirmation. Eugenol. What is the liquid in with the Eugenol? Do you have an SDS on this Vial? Answer: Eugenol is a colorless to pale yellow aromatic oily liquid derived from cloves (allylbenzene - chemical class). Used in aquaculture as an anethestic. SDS provided. Question 4: Isoeugenol. What is the liquid in with the Eugenol? Do you have an SDS on this Vial? Answer: Isoeugenol is the isomerization (cis and trans) of eugenol (oil based liquid). It is a phenylpropanoid. SDS provided. Question 5: Some of the solid waste barrels show D001 and F003. Answer: This was guidance from external contacts since some of the liquid waste that consisted of water, acetonitrile and methanol was absorbed on cat litter. Question 6: Is the Liquid Waste absorbed on cat litter separate from Solid waste not carrying a RCRA code? Answer: Most items are separate from the liquid waste absorbed on cat litter. However, there is a glass solvent bottle that cat litter was added directly to for absorption and 1 or 2 solvent cans that cat litter was added to as a precaution to absorb any lingering solvent in the containers. Question 7: Why was the RCRA wastes absorbed onto cat litter? Answer: Previous Radiation Safety Officer thought if the liquid was absorbed to cat litter it could be considered a solid and easier to dispose. Question 8: Is the USGS defining the cat litter that holds the absorbed liquid as a RCRA D001? Answer: Yes, since the solutions were a mixture consisting of mostly water but also acetonitrile and methanol, we are taking the precaution and defining the absorbed cat litter as RCRA D001 per guidance from external contacts. Question 9: SW2 does not appear to have any RCRA codes associated with the Inventory can this be confirmed? Answer: We do not have any RCRA codes associated with contents in SW2 barrel. Based on the listed contents, to the best of our knowledge we confirm this. Question 10: SW3 lists waste codes of D001 and F003 however there is HCL listed in the Inventory. Answer: Sarafloxacin HCL is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for our aquaculture drug research. This form of Sarafloxacin is a salt which is water soluble. Sarafloxin HCL is a non-hazardous substance. SDS is provided.
