617/496-7692 Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires four
fused silica lens blanks to be used in a refractive corrector for the
f/5 focus of the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT). This corrector will
be placed in operation after the MMT is converted to use a single 6.5
meter primary mirror. With the refractive corrector in place, the
converted MMT will have a 1 degree diameter field-of-view, producing a
focal surface approximately 0.61 meters in diameter. The useful
spectral range of the corrector will be between wavelengths of 3200
Angstroms and 2 micrometers. The blanks to be provided have diameters
ranging between 52 and 82 centimeters and center thicknesses of up to
11 centimeters. The two largest blanks must be sagged to radii of
approximately 63 centimeters, but the two smaller blanks will have a
plano-plano geometry. The refractive index homogeneity of the blanks
should be better than 5x10-6 at 6328 Angstroms. The fused silica shall
have fewer than 2 square millimeters of inclusions in any 100 cubic
centimeters of volume. Given the spectral range of interest, we would
prefer fused silica with a minimal OH content. Delivery of the blanks
will be required by May 1995. Only written or faxed requests (FAX #
617/496-7692) received directly from the requestor are acceptable. All
responsible sources may submit an offer. No telephone requests for the
solicitation package will be accepted. (0364) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0259 19950103\93-0001.SOL)
