999, Richland, Washington 99352 70 -- MASS STORAGE DATA BASE COMPUTER SYSTEM SOL DBCS-1. Contact Alta
Jones, Sr. Contract Specialist, MSIN K6-02. Pacific Northwest
Laboratory's (PNL) Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL),
has a requirement to acquire a state-of-the-art mass storage system
named the DataBase Computer System, Phase 1 (DBCS-1. DBCS-1 shall be
capable of efficiently supporting the data storage and retrieval needs
of a variety of high-performance and medium-performance client
computing platforms connected to different classes of networks within
the EMSL. At a minimum, this system shall provide 300 gigabytes of disk
cache and 7 to 10 terabytes of robotically controlled media libraries
to support the storage needs of all client computing platforms. With
the exception of network switches and cables, all related hardware and
software for DBCS-1 will be provided by the Offeror. The DBCS-1 system
must have the followin essential characteristics in order to be
considered a truly robust, scalable mass storage system: (1)
Hierarchical storage system with automatic migration of files between
disk and robotically controlled media (3.g., tape) libraries. (2) The
Offero4r must provide the best price for specified capacity &
performance. (3) Capable of supporting the connectivity to
medium-performance (e.g., FDDI) and high-performance (e.g., HIPPI)
networks. (4) Scalable by adding servers & peripherals. (5) Extensible
to future generatons of peripherals and server CPUs with better
capacity, performance, cost-effectiveness, or other improvements. (6)
Provide the look and feel of a single file system view to clients for
directory and file manipulations. (7) Separately optimized capabilities
for efficiently storing/retrieving big/fast/few and smaller/slower/many
files. Del to Richland, WA by June 1996. Comments are solicited by the
Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) on draft specifications(Request for
Comments -RFC) to be issued no earlier than January 15, 1995 with a
response date of February 15, 1995. This synopsis is for information
