COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JANUARY 10,1995 PSA#1259National Institute of Standards and Technology, Acquisition and
Assistance Division, Building 301, Room Bll7, Gaithersburg, MD 20899 D -- DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF AN IMMERSADESK SYSTEM SOL 52SBNB5C8605
DUE 022295 POC Barbara Camp (301) 975-6339, Ruth Maris The National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), plans to acquire services
from the University of Illinois at Chicago, (UIC), Office of Grants and
Contracts, 809 S. Marshfield, Chicago, IL 60612, to furnish, design,
construct, install, train, implement and delivery of an ImmersaDesk
System. The contractor shall produce a prototype desk-sized reality
system called the ImmersaDesk. It is a projection-based system that
achieves immersion through the use of large screen stereo displays and
user tracking. Deliverable 1: a.) Mouse, eyewear and tracking, CE-VRX;
b.) Marquee 8000 video projector with p43 green phosphor (Qty 1); c.)
Eyewear CE-VRX (Qty 2); d.) Silicon Graphics Indy Workstation; e.) 2 GB
Tape Drives; and f.) CD ROM Drive. Deliverable 2: The ImmersaDesk
virtual reality system will be designed, built, installed, and made
operational at NIST. It will use the Onyx VTX that is already in place
at NIST. The first phase of training of NIST personnel will be
designed and delivered. This includes a full week of on-site training
on the ImmersaDesk software libraries and subsequent customer support
via e-mail or telephone for the duration of the project. In addition,
NIST and other staff will be able to spend a week at the Contractor's
facility to evaluate the CAVE full-scale implementation in the context
of software developed on the NIST ImmersaDesk. Deliverable 3:
Interfacing the ImmersaDesk to ATR's Gear Factory Simulation and
Control System, to achieve roughly half the level of graphics real-time
functionality that is currently possible in non-stereo display on the
Onyx screen. This will involve selection of an appropriate format for
storage of Immersion Displays, and software coding for conversion of
the Gear Factory Information to this format. Some software tuning for
NIST's VTX graphics subsystem will be necessary since UIC's software
assumes Reality Engine-2 capability. Stereo will be achieved with a
120Hz refresh, twice the normal rate of 60HZ for non-stereo, therefore
halving the graphics output. Deliverable 4: Royalty-free license of
the CAVE/ImmersaDesk Software Libraries. The software required is a
copyright of UIC. Delivery of the first deliverable is required 3
months after date of contract award. FOB destination, Gaithersburg, MD.
We intend to solicit one source under authority of FAR 6.302-1.
