R -- CHROMIUM PLATING OF SUPERCONDUCTING WIRE POC John Tennyson, Sr. Subcontract Administrator, telephone 510-423-2383 Thee University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, seeks vendor sources for developing hard chromium plating of superconducting wires required for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) projects in the DOE magnetic-confinement fusion energy program. Nearly a hundred thousand kilometers of wire is expected to be plated in the United States. In support of this need, the objectives of this program are (a) to seek vendors desiring to participate in this plating effort, (b) to transfer to interested plating vendors a process developed at LLNL for continuous hard chromium plating on copper and/or superconducting wires, and (c) to verify vendor capability by testing long samples of wire plated using either the LLNL process or a process of their own. With respect to (a) above, any vendor desiring to participate in this program should send an Expression Of Interest to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, P.O. Box 808 L-643, Livermore, CA 94550 ATTN. Theresa Wallace by February 1, 1995. It should include relevant information describing plating experience, personnel capability, equipment and processes in place; quality, environmental, safety, and industrial health certifications and procedures in place; infrastructure capability; and information indicating corporate longevity and financial strength. With respect to (b) above, a demonstration of the LLNL plating process has been scheduled to take place at LLNL on February 22, 1995, from 8:30 AM till 5:00 PM. The demonstration will consist of continuous plating of long lengths of wire using a selected plating bath and conditions. Technical personnel will be available to answer questions about the process and equipment, ITER and TPX project needs, and QA requirements. All interested individuals and agencies are welcome to witness the demonstration and obtain information. In order to witness the demonstration, send a written request to the address above before January 31, 1995. The name, social security number, date of birth and citizenship of each proposed visitor must be included in order to arrange access to LLNL. Only US citizens will be permitted. Detailed information for the visits will be sent soon after receipt of the requests. With respect to (c) above, two to four vendors will be selected for verification of capability based on the information provided with their Expressions of Interest. Attendance at the demonstration of the LLNL process is not a requirement for selection. For verification of capability, LLNL will furnish wire and the vendors will provide their own plating baths, chemicals, power supplies, electricity and manpower. Vendors may use the LLNL process and wire handling equipment for the verification or they may use their own. It is expected that participants in the verification program will be selected by February 25, 1995. Facsimile and telephone responses will not be accepted. This notice is to assist the University in the development of potential sources for competition; no solicitation is currently available. The cost of participating in the Chromium Plating of Superconducting Wire Program will not be reimbursed and does not create an obligation on the University to issue a subcontract with any program participant. Please any immediate question or general comments to Theresa Wallace, 510 422 9745 (0012)
