The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a requirement for a study on recessive Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a blinding disorder of genetic origin. The Contractor will be responsible for conducting on-site assessments of twenty families in India with a history of recessive RP. The Contractor shall establish centers in one or more regions in India to which family members will travel. The Contractor shall obtain individual medical histories, ophthalmic examinations for each family member by fully trained clinical ophthalmologists, as well as viable blood specimens from each family member. The specimens shall be sent by the Contractor to the National Eye Institute at the NIH. One sample shall be retained by the Contractor to screen for mutations in genes known to cause RP. This study should be completed within two years. The NIH intends to contract on a sole source basis with Dr. Michael J. Denton, Department of Biochemistry, Box 56, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, under the authority of FAR 6.302-1 for this requirement. This is not a formal solicitation. However, concerns that respond to this notice must furnish concise responses directed specifically to the requirements mentioned above. Sources demonstrating the capability to accomplish the above shall supply pertinent information in sufficient detail to demonstrate the ability to perform. Information furnished shall include enough material to perform a proper evaluation.
