COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JANUARY 30,1995 PSA#1272CONFERENCE ON LIFE EXTENSION OF AGING MACHINERY AND STRUCTURES The
Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT), formerly
the Mechanical Failures Prevention Group, is holding its 49th Meeting
at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, Virginia on April 18-20, 1995.
The sponsors of MFPT 49 are the Office of Naval Research, U.S. Army
Research Laboratory, Naval Surface Warfare Center and the Vibration
Institute. MFPT 49 provides a technology transfer forum for the public
and private sectors dedicated to achieving competitive advantage in
linking failure mechanisms and diagnostics. The conference THEME is
Life Extension of Aging Machinery and Structures. The Keynote Speaker
is Dr. Bernard S. Loeb, Director of the Office of Research and
Engineering, National Transportation Safety Board; his topic is
``Prediction of Mechanical Failures: Lessons Learned from
Transportation Accidents''. Dr. Loeb will be followed in the Opening
Session by four distinguished invited speakers. Mr. Richard H. Menke
from Eli Lilly and Company will present `` A Manufacturing Perspective
of Reliability''. Dr. Michael L. Basehore, Federal Aviation
Administration Technical Center, will describe a program on ``Providing
for the Continuing Airworthiness of Commuter Airplanes''. Dr. Steven B.
Chase of the Federal Highway Administration will speak on ``Developing
New Tools and Techniques for Bridge Inspection of the Future''. Mr.
Richard F. Healing, Director of Safety and Survivability, Office of the
Secretary of the Navy, will discuss the Navy's need for ``Condition
Based Maintenance Equipment with Potential Application to Fleet Safety
and Survivability''. Mini Courses will be presented on ``Mechanical
Diagnostics Technologies'' and ``Failure Mechanisms in Polymers''.
There are three Plenary Lectures: Professor Marjorie Ann E. Natishan of
the University of Maryland on ``Learning From Failure'', Mr. Helmut
Thielsch of Thielsch Engineering on ``Life Extension Considerations in
Failure, Failure Prevention and Repair'' and Professor Marvin L. Roush
of the University of Maryland on ``The Evolution of Reliability
Engineering and Its Relationship to Life Extension''. Technical
sessions will be held on: (1) Failure Analysis, (2) Diagnostics I and
II, (3) Life Extension, (4) Sensors Technology, (5) Time Frequency
Analysis and (6) Detection, Monitoring and Response. A highlight of the
meeting will be a Panel/Workshop on ``The Role of Condition Based
Maintenance in Machinery Life Extension''. Technical Exhibits will
complement the Technical Program. Government agencies, universities,
non-profit institutes, information centers and private companies are
welcome to purchase exhibit tables. For additional details or to
