COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF FEBRUARY 1,1995 PSA#1274Westinghouse Savannah River Company, P.O. Box 616, Aiken, SC 29801 A -- MINIATURE PUMPS FOR CONE PENETROMETER SUBSURFACE CHARACTERIZATION
AND MONITORING POC: Caroline Teelon, Telephone (803) 725-5540. This is
a special announcement made by Westinghouse Savannah River Company
(WSRC), management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South
Carolina, to determine industry interest in three miniature pumps to be
used to obtain liquid and gas samples in cone penetrometer subsurface
investigations. Three different prototype pumps; have been developed by
WSRC personnel to fit in standard cone penetrometer rods that are
pushed into the subsurface using hydraulic rams. DOE has applied for
patent protection on these pumps and can make licenses available to
interested organizations. These new pumps overcome current sampling
limitations by providing multiple samples at multiple depths without
bailing or removing and re-inserting rods, and can be operated
simultaneously with the standard cone penetrometer suite of sensors
(i.e., tip resistance, sleeve friction, electrical resistivity, etc.).
