84 -- MARKET SURVEY FOR INDIVIDUAL PROTECTIVE GEAR SOL DAAK60-CBD5-0009 DUE 031995 POC Survivability Directorate, U.S. Army Natick RD&E Center, ATTN: SATNC-ICA (Erich AmRhein), Natick, MA 01760-5019 Manufacturers of protective overvests sought. The U.S. Army Natick RD&E Center (Natick) is interested in locating concerns who are either currently manufacturing small arms protective overvests or harnesses configured with both front and back plates, or which can produce such items with minimal developmental effort. The overvest / harness (system) requirements are as follows: (a) Ballistic Resistance - The system must defeat AK 47, round M1943 type PS and AK 74, round 5.45 x 39.5 mm or certified armor which meets the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standard 0101.03 Ballistic Resistance of Police Body Armor for Level III which defeats 7.62 mm (308 Winchester) FMJ, 150 grain at 2750 ft/sec. Concern should furnish test data which supports AK 47 or AK 74 or comparable performance against NIJ projectiles. (b) Design - The system must protect the vital organs against small arms by the small arms protection modules/plates, front and back, supported by an overvest / harness designed to be worn over the current vests. The configuration must provide for ''one size fits all'' through a quick release Fastex/Velcro type arrangement at each side and at the shoulders. It is desired that the area of coverage for the small arms protective modules be approximately 120 square inches (10'' X 12'') for each of the front and back inserts. (c) Weight - The total weight of the system shall not exceed 17.5 pounds. (d) The system must be compatible with the Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT) vest and load bearing equipment, and must be suitable for use by male and female dismounted soldiers. Natick is searching for INFORMATION ONLY from manufacturers or dealers with the above described products/capability. Information should include an item description, which details the material descriptions, ballistic certifications, literature and illustrations, relevant company background/facilities/ experience, and any other information which the concern believes demonstrates its ability to provide the desired item(s). Firms must provide technical information which demonstrates that they have the capability to perform the type of work either in-house or by subcontract. If by subcontract, the firm should identify, when possible, the name of the subcontractor and provide technical information from that subcontractor.
