Functional Requirements for EDA/SQL or its ''off-the-shelf''
equivalent: 1) The software must be able to access a wide variety of
data bases on multiple platforms in the current SSA client/server
environment involving local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks
(WANs). The product must provide full-function transparent database
access to the mainframe or LAN database server using a GUI front-end.
2) The software must support the current SSA client server network
architecture. The software must support access to the following
databases on the mainframe: IDMS, FOCUS, VSAM, and QSAM. The software
must support the following software on the client workstation:
Microsoft C/C++, Microsoft Visual Basic, POWERBUILDER, ENFIN, and
FOCUS/EIS. The software must support the following communications and
platforms: IBM TOKEN RING network protocol, NOVELL NETWARE 3.X, TCP/IP,
LU2.0 (3270 SNA), LU 6.2 (peer-to-peer), Windows 3.0 or later, IBM OS/2
2.1 and higher, IBM mainframe MVS XA and MVS/ESA. The software must
support the following PC/LAN databases: PC/FOCUS, ORACLE, SQL SERVER,
dBase, WATCOM, and PARADOX. 3) The software must be capable of running
on a client workstation with the following characteristics; 386/486
microprocessor, 16MB RAM, Windows 3.x, DOS 5.x and 250 MB hard disk. 4)
The software must be capable of running against a LAN database server
with the following characteristics: 386/486 microprocessor, 24MB RAM,
1GB hard disk, and OS/2 operating system. 5) The software must provide
security or interface to mainframe security software, including TOP
SECRET. The user must be able to log into the software with a single
user-id without having to repeat the login against each data source. 6)
The software must allow the application to be insulated from the
specific database manipulation languages and from the specifics of the
underlying communications between platforms and databases. 7) The
software must interface with Microsoft C/C++, Microsoft Visual Basic,
FOCUS/EIS to provide access to remote databases. 8) The product must be
able to send a user-developed SQL command to a remote database server
for execution in its unaltered form. 9) The product must allow the
mainframe to act as a client and access databases that reside on a
remote LAN. 10) The product must be able to perform updates to remote
databases. 11) The product must support asynchronuous processing to
take advantage of overlapping operations to reduce potential
bottlenecks. 12) The software must provide a facility to allow the
operation of the product to be monitored or traced throughout the
enviornment. 13) The product must provide compression/decompression to
reduce the size of the data traffic on the network or I/O channels.
14) The product must interface to desktop tools including Lotus 1-2-3,
Microsoft Excel, and WorkPerfect. 15) The product must have a proven
record of success. 16) The vendor shall provide two copies of
documentation, written in a straight-forward manner for installation,
operation and maintenance of the product. The software will be
installed on an IBM 3090 and an Amdahl 5990, located at SSA's National
Computer Center in Baltimore, MD. Vendors capable of providing the
software products with the above characteristics are invited to submit

training users in the use of the offered software product. Interested
parties must respond to this notice in writing within 15 calendar days
from the date of this publication. PLEASE REFER TO EDA/SQL.JT. This is
a request for product information only, not a Request for Proposal
