Two populations of relict trillium were recently discovered on the Fort
Benning military reservation. Very little is known of the population
structure, biology, or preferred management techniques for this species
at any locality. Little research has been conducted concerning human
disturbances that may be compatible with maintenance of healthy
populations of this species. The objective of this project is designed
to document population structure, quantify the adequacy of natural
pollinators for seed production and explore the importance of browsing
by deer in determining population structure of the Fort Benning
populations. The approach will be accomplished by monitoring
established, permanently-marked quadrats in representative portions of
each population. Plants will be mapped and revisited biweekly during
the active season (approximately January thorugh June) to document size
classes present and to monitor survival and flowering/fruiting success
of individuals. Pollination adequacy will be determined by comparing
fruiting success between plants, and by comparing seed production of
untreated plants with those pollinated by hand. Importance of deer
browsing will be determined by comparing survival of individuals in
various size classes and by comparing seedling production in plots
caged to exclude deer with seedling production in plots not caged. This
announcement IS NOT a Request for Proposals and no contract will be
awarded solely on the basis of a response hereto or any follow-up
information subsequently submitted. The Army will not make any
reimbursement for any costs in connection with providing this
information. (0044) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0047 19950214\F-0012.SOL)
