A -- LONGITUDINAL EVALUATION OF PROSTATE GROWTH AND DISEASE IN MALE BALTIMORE LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF AGING (BLSA) SUBJECTS (MRI STUDIES) SOL NIH-AG-95-05 POC Contract Specialist: Silver C. Jones, (301) 496-4487/Contracting Officer: Sherley M. Mizzell, (301) 496-4487. The Government intends to negotiate with The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD to facilitate the longitudinal collection of MRI studies to obtain quantitative data regarding changes in prostate volume (central, peripheral, and transition zones) and anatomy of the prostate in normal men and during the early stages of the development and progression of prostate disease (i.e., benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer). The key requirements of the proposed contract are: 1) to utilize recently developed state-of-the-art phased-array coil MRI technology in order to reduce the invasiveness of the procedure and increase the resolution of the imaging data collected, 2) to develop, implement, and evaluate longitudinal quality control measures for the MRI imaging procedures in order to allow the accurate assessment of longitudinal changes in prostate volume, structure, and position, 3) to provide a testing location, facilities, and procedures that are sufficient to ensure that testing can be completed rapidly enough to avoid scheduling conflicts with other testing the participants must undergo as part of the BLSA, 4) to develop and implement methods of validating, standardizing, and interpreting phased-array coil MRI imaging data and 5) to evaluate and interpret prostatic MRI data, and participate in developing scientific publications reporting results of this component of the BLSA prostat study. Statutory authority: 41 U.S.C. 253 (c) (1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. The cited authority is applicable because The Johns Hopkins University is the only contractor in the Baltimore region with phased-array coil MRI technology and the close proximity of the University to the BLSA population. See Numbered Note(s): 22. (0045)
