COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 16,1995 PSA#1304

Westinghouse Savannah River Company, P.O. Box 616, Aiken, SC 29802

A -- UTILIZATION OF REACTOR COOLING WATER BASINS POC Robert H. Finley, Telephone (803)557-9982 or Mark V. Eidson, (803)644-6519. This is a special notice by Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, SC. WSRC wishes to determine interest in concepts for private or public utilization of the SRS's Reactor Cooling Water Basins and supporting Piping Systems (e.g., alternative use at the DOE Hanford facility has resulted in these types of basins being used as fish hatcheries). SRS, occupying over 300 square miles in the west central section of South Carolina, was constructed in the early 1950's to support the nation's defense by producing special nuclear materials. The Reactor basins are three-section, rectangular, nonradioactively contaminated concrete structures located near the reactor buildings. The reactors are not operational. Each section is 248 feet wide by 266 feet in length by 16.5 feet depth (to overflow weir). Each basin section is capable of containing approximately 8.1 million gallons of water, giving a total capacity of 24.3 million gallons in each reactor area and 97.2 million gallons for the four areas. The four Reactor areas are located 1 to 5 miles apart. Water is supplied to the basins from the Savannah River via numerous raw water pumps. The flow rate in each area can be regulated by a butterfly valve. Abundant water is available from the Savannah River at a rate greater than 100,000 gallons per minute (if necessary) as supplied by the raw water pumps. Although the raw water pumps are currently operational, long term operation of these pumps and power usage would be the responsibility of the user. Water is pumped or gravity drained from the basins and is returned to the river, onsite lakes, ponds or streams. Additional information is available through WSRC by contacting Robert H. Finley at (803)557-9982 or Mark V. Eidson at (803)644-6519. Interested parties should provide a written response by March 31, 1995, to the address provided below indicating interest and a brief description (no more than three (3) pages) containing their proposed concepts of utilization. Expressions of interest should be mailed to Cris W. Van Horn, U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Community Outreach, P.O. Box A, Aiken, SC 29802. (072)
