Dick, 617/495-7401, FAX 617/496-7692 Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires five aluminum subreflector assemblies for construction of five radio telescopes for the Submillimeter Array. The subreflector is the secondary mirror in a Cassegrain antenna operating at 860 GHz. Each subreflector assembly consists of 6061 machined aluminum casting with an aluminum insert at the center of the mirror. The casting is 350 mm in diameter, has a center thickness of 63 mm, a honeycombed flat rear surface, and a hyperboloid convex mirror front surface. The hyperboloid surface must be machined to an absolute accuracy of 1 micron RMS and have a maximum surface roughness of 0.2 microns.
