SOUGHT - The United States Information Agency is soliciting information
regarding the availability of off-the-shelf application software to
provide office automation and radio news production services in 47
languages on industry-standard computing platforms to be acquired for
the Voice of America (VOA) headquarters in Washington, D.C., the VOA
Regional News Center in New York, N.Y., the VOA Regional NewsCentre in
London, U.K., and the VOA Regional News Center in Hong Kong. Office
automation services must be available in Albanian, Arabic, Amharic,
Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Bulgarian, Burmese, Cantonese, Creole,
Croatian, Czech, Dari, English, Estonian, Farsi, French, Georgian,
Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Khmer, Korean, Kurdish,
Lao, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese,
Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swahili, Thai,
Tibetan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, and Vietnamese. The
applications should be capable of executing in a distributed computing
environment that supports the TCP/IP protocol stack and standard
TCP/IP application-level network services over a variety of transports,
including Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), 100 Mb/sec Ethernet, and 10
Mb/sec Ethernet. The applications should be capable of executing on a
computer operating system that permits the simultaneous invocation of
the office automation and audio production programs as independent
processes in protected memory space susceptible to pre-emption by the
operating system with scheduling priorities established by the user or
system administrator. The Agency is particularly interested in office
automation software that supports the unicode multilingual
character-encoding standard. Firms having the ability to furnish these
software applications are requested to provide written notification to
the procurement office listed above within 30 calendar days of the date
of this synopsis. Firms that respond should provide detailed
information and specifications of the software applications. This is
