COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 28,1995 PSA#1312National Library of Medicine Office of Acquisitions Management, Bldg.

Officer/Daniel Hartinger, Contract Specialist, (301) 496-6546. The
National Library of Medicine is seeking small business sources for the
preservation microfilming of brittle library materials as a means of
saving the information contained within them for future use.
Preservation microfilming requires high standards for the quality of
volume preparation, updating of bibliographic records, filming, and
quality control. American National Standards Institute standards for
the photographic processes used to produce an archival quality
microfilm and other stringent technical requirements must be met. At
the same time bibliographic control of the material must be carefully
maintained to preserve access to it. Bibliographic control is achieved
by careful page-by-page collation to identify all bibliographic and
physical problems, preparation of targets and update of online records
when volumes have been collated and later when the microfilm has been
produced. NLM has written specifications and guidelines for targets
