Tel:713-483-8395 This is a sources sought synopsis sent out for a
Virtual Reality Datavisor Head Mounted Display System. The head mounted
display system will be used as the stereo graphic display device in the
Integrated Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA)/Remote Manipulator System
(RMS) Virtual Reality Training System to increase the training
efficiency of the simulation for EVA astronaut crewmembers to prepare
for critical EVA's on upcomming space shuttle missions. --The head
mounted display system must meet the following specifications: 1. Must
be compatible with the Silicon Graphics Inc. Onyx Reality Engine
computer graphics systems. 2. Support video formats up to and including
1280 X 1024 (pixel resolution) at 30 Hz. 3. Have usable field-of-view
of at least 100 deg. Horizontal x 65 deg. Vertical in conjunction with
at least 30 deg. of stereo overlap. 4. Exit pupil greater than 12 mm.
5. Brightness greater than 10 foot-Lamberts at the eye. 6. Control of
video control electronics (display parameters and diagnostic
functions) through a standard RS-232 computer interface. 7. Weigh less
than 4.5 pounds. 8. Have mounting points for standard position
sensors,headphones, and microphones. 9. Be delivered prior to September
1, 1995. 10. The entire viewing area (field of view) must be free from
any extraneous external or internal (to the optics) reflections. The
final acceptability of the display will be based entirely upon
demonstration to, and acceptace by a panel consisting of at least six
(6) astronauts with extravehicular activity (EVA) training experience
in the Virtual Reality Simulation. --The head mounted display system
will be delivered to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston
