COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF APRIL 3,1995 PSA#1316U.S. Department of Energy, Ohio Field Office, PCD, P.O. Box 3020,
Miamisburg, Ohio 45343-3020 B -- BENCH-SCALE TESTING OF MECHANICAL AND TALL COLUMN FLOTATION SOIL
SEPARATION SYSTEMS SOL DE-RP24-950H20007 due 052295. Contact Point,
Michael J. Kepler, Contracting Officer, (513) 865-3849. The U.S.
Department of Energy intends to award a contract to the University of
Nevada, Reno, to conduct bench-scale testing of innovative applications
of proven flotation technologies from the minining industry to remove
uranium from soil. Bench-scale testing of Mechanical Flotation and
Column Flotation Separation Systems will be conducted in order to
confirm the results of previous testing performed on Fernald
Environmental Management Project soils, to optimize operating
parameters, establish operating conditions, and to optimize the process
strategies for a sequential flotation process to incorporate a carrier
to enhanced mechanical flotation with the tall column. The University
of Nevada has been selected as the sole source for this effort because
of their unique qualifications regarding this area of research. As a
result of the University of Nevada's work on the Heavy Metals
Contaminated Soils Project, university personnel have an in-depth
knowledge of, and experience with, advanced mineral processing
technologies associated with radioactive contaminated soils and
possesses a unique combination of skills including experienced mineral
processing engineers familiar with the latest developments of their
industry, qualified radiation safety professionals, and hazardous
materials experts. Moreover, the University of Nevada possesses a new,
and state of the art laboratory and testing facility to conduct
demonstration tests, analyze the results, and perform technology
evaluations. This laboratory is a DOE supported Soil Washing Laboratory
and is unique in the sense that it provides controlled environment as
often as needed to carry out the soil decontamination research. The
University of Nevada has a current license to possess radioactive
contaminated soils and also has been designated as a DOE support
facility. The solicitation will be issued approximately 20 April 1995.
