SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES: EXPLOSIVE COMPONENTS FACILITY The Explosives Technology Group at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico has attained DOE approval as a Technology Deployment Center/User Facility for the new 96,000 ft2 Explosive Components Facility (ECF) and are seeking alliances or consortia with industrial partners. We offer multidisciplinary, concept-to-recycle capabilities in the area of explosives technology. This means we can take an idea from concept, design, modeling, and characterization through prototyping, performance testing, diagnostics, and developing manufacturing specifications. Our ongoing projects in demilitarization, disposal, and reapplication of explosives provide the final step in the life cycle process. Systems Designs: Sandia has extensive experiece in design and systematic evaluation of explosive systems and subsystems. This has proved valuable to our customers in understanding design margin and next assembly functions. More efficient designs with minimal explosives and optimized electrical firing systems result. Energetic Materials: Sandia is a leader in the development of a wide range of energetic materials, including high explosives, pyrotechnics, propellants and thermites-designed to improve the safety, performance and durability of explosive components and subsystems. Special emphasis is on developing environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditionally used materials and methods. Explosive Components Design: Sandia's unique advancements in explosive components design include: low energy designs for slappers, expertise in shape charges, and the development of SCB (semiconductor bridge) technology which incorporates microelectronics for ``smarter'' precision-timed explosive devices. Advanced Testing and Diagnostics: Sandia's sophisticated testing facilities and expert staff provide state-of-the-art performance and safety testing capabilities for materials, explosive devices, components and assemblies. We utilize a combination of flash x-ray, spectroscopy, high-speed photography, piezoelectric/piezororesistive gauges for explosive shock applications, and more. Firing Systems Technology: We design and engineer environmentally-conscious solutions that satisfy our customers' needs involving firing sets. This area involves: explosives-to-electric transducers, fuzes, power conversion, test equipment design and support, subsystem mechanical design and packaging, and related applications, including advancements in optically-engineered subsystems. Explosive Detection: An important contribution from Sandia's explosives technology group is our expertise in explosive detection (ground contaminants) and the treatment of explosive waste water. We continue to assist the DOE and DoD in disposal of pyrotechnic and explosive ordnance componentry. To express interest in forming a Sandia-based alliance and to request more information, please write or fax to Sandia National Laboratories, attention: Ms. Kay Carter, P.O.
