N01-ES-25354 ENTITLED ''PATERNALLY MEDIATED EFFECTS ON REPRODUCTION''
POC Contact Vondia C. Malone, Contract Specialist, (919) 541-0428;
Phillip D. Jones, Contracting Officer, (919) 541-0426 The National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) intends to negotiate
with the University of Bristol, England as a sole source for a
20-monthextension to existing contract number N01-ES-25354 to
investigate environmental pollution and child development in the first
three years of life, building on the AvonLongitudinal Study of
Pregnancies and Children (ALSPAC). The contract as currentlywritten
provides the English ELSPAC (European component) data on exposure of
thefetus and infant to various toxicants, and provides for the
collection of data from theALSPAC study. Preliminary analyses of the
data collected by the ALSPAC study indicated that change in the
sleeping position of infants during the first six months of lifewas
accompanied by a reduction in ear infections and a reduction in the
proportion ofsix-month old children suspected of having a hearing
problem. Because the childrenare growing older, it is important to
obtain hearing measurements as soon as possibleto allow for collection
of these data prior to the children's aging out of the appropriateage
range for measurement of hearing and correlation to earlier data.
Authority: 41USC 253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. Inherent
