study will provide a description of families served by Head Start, by:
(1) describing characteristics of the families of two cohorts of 1,520
three- and four-year-old children each, enrolled in a nationally
representative sample of 40 randomly selected Head Start programs, by
interviewing parents regarding their family demographics, concerns,
initial expectations, and subsequent satisfaction with the Head Start
program; and (2) describe Head Start programs' services to families and
barriers to the provision of family services through interviews with
appropriate Head Start personnel (i.e., Family Services Coordinator,
Parent Involvement Coordinator, Program Director). This descriptive
study will take place in three contiguous 12 month phases for a total
of thirty-six (36) months. An embedded case study design will also be
carried out during the second phase with a subsample of families
participating in 5-10 sites identified as exemplary programs.
