27709 A -- IDENTIFICATION OF HEREDITARY PROSTATE CANCER GENE BASED ON
FINNISH FAMILIES SOL NIH-ES-95-29 POC Contact Velvet M. Torain,
Contract Specialist, 919/541-0400; Phillip D. Jones, Contracting
Officer, 919/541-0426 The National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences intends to negotiate a contract with Tampere University,
Tampere Finland, to explore the genetics of hereditary prostate cancer
(HPC) by: 1) determining the yield of potential participants with HPC
or related HPC affected Finnish men; 2) finding out how many of those
identified in the data base search are available for sampling and
willing to participate; 3) collecting blood specimens from participants
in order to extract DNA for shipment to the National Center for Human
Genome Research for linkage disequilibrium analyses and other tests;
and 4) determining genetic changes in sporadic and hereditary prostate
cancer. Authority: 41 USC 253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. The
Finnish population is uniquely suited for studies of the genetics of
prostate cancer because Finland has developed a comprehensive and
complete central databases on the medical characteristics of its
population. Tampere University has extensive experience in prostate
cancer research, and has many previous joint studies with the Finnish
Cancer Registry and will be able to utilize those contacts to
effectively trace patients with family history. Tampere University also
has a computer database of virtually all prostate cancer cases from the
years 1977 to 1992. Inherent duplication of cost to the Government and
unacceptable delays associated with initiating a new study to obtain
data that already exist makes competition unfeasible for the above
described work. See Numbered Note 22. (0116) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0006 19950427\A-0006.SOL)
