Wilcox, 202-619-5871 The U.S. Information Agency (USIA) is accepting
applications for the Director of Courses (DOC) position as its
affiliated American Language Center in Damascus, Syria. The Damascus
ALC provides English language courses from beginning to advanced level,
has a teaching staff of approximately 700 students a term. The duties
and responsibilities of the DOC are as follows: (a) Recruitment,
hiring, training and supervision of American and locally-hired teachers
and administrative staff. Ensuring overall quality of instruction at
the ALC; (b) Financial management of the program, including budgeting,
payroll, accounting, and preparation of quarterly financial and
statistical reports. Program must be self-financing; (c) Curriculum and
materials development, organization and scheduling of courses, and
registration of students; and (d) ordering and distribution of teaching
materials, care of teaching and office equipment and classroom
facilities. Qualifications: (a) Native speaker of English; (b) advanced
degree (M.A.) in TEFL/TESL, preferably from a U.S. university (This
degree must reflect courses that relate directly to an EFL/ESL teaching
situation.); (c) Minimum of two years previous experience as an
academic administrator/manager; (d) Wide TEFL/TESL classroom
experience, preferably some of it outside of the United States; (e)
American citizenship; (f) A broad knowledge of the United States and
its culture; (g) some knowledge of Arabic; (h) strong interpersonal and
organization skills, keen attention to detail and ability to plan
ahead. Preference to be given to U.S. citizens. Contract for one year,
with renewal option for two additional one year periods. Salary is
based on qualifications and previous experience. Salary qualifies as
foreign earnings under some IRS regulations hence may be ''tax free''
depending on personal circumstances. Interested, qualified applicants
