COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 3,1995 PSA#1338LAW ENFORCEMENT TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE The National Institute of
Justice, with the support of the American Defense Preparedness
Association (ADPA), is sponsoring the second annual Law Enforcement
Technology for the 21st Century Conference May 15, 16 and 17 at the
Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. This Conference is designed
to: illustrate the real needs for law enforcement tools and what kinds
of technologies and systems are being developed that might fufill
those needs; to educate the audience about the kinds of limitations
that exist in realizing the promise of new technologies; and to
generate concrete discussion on what might be done to get beyond these
impediments. Judge William Webster is the Honorary Conference Chair
and the Deputy Attorney General of the United States is the Conference
Chair. The Conference will open on the morning of the 15th with
remarks by the Conference Chair then a sequence of presentations on
what last year's Conference accomplishd (technology developments &
needs, new regional National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology
Centers, new Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization,
and the relevance of these developments from a Chief of Police point of
view). The afternoon session will be distinguished ``Fred Friendly''
seminar which will address criminal justice scenarios that impose
changing demands on law enforcement. The focus of the seminar will be
on the appropriate role of government in the development of new
technologies for law enforcement. On May 16, the morning session will
address the business of technology from an industry point of view and
the afternoon session will address funding issues, including two and
half hours of presentations on real life law enforcement creative
funding applications for the purchase of equipment and systems as well
as a discussion of how to go about implementing creative funding
programs. The final session on the morning of May 17 will address the
role of federal, state and local government in research, technology
development and procurement. The Vice President, Attorney General of
the United States and congressional leaders have been invited to be
keynote speakers throughout the conference. There will be technology
exhibits at the conference and attendees will be able to identify
opportunities in the approach to penetrating the law enforcement
