project is an architectural and design collage for a new facade for the
PEPCO substation #17, located on 8th Street between D and E Streets,
NW, Washington, DC. The new facade will replace the existing porcelain
panel and granite cladding with a new structurally independent wall
capable of supporting a series of historic building elements. All
venting elements, water resistent details, flashing and building access
must meet PEPCO requirements. The Engineer shall provide design
development and feasibility analysis for the reconstruction of the
portions of six (6) facades. The work will include: inventorying the
stored materials, reassembling the materials to verify quantity, size,
configuration and condition; review the existing PEPCO structure and
foundations and openings, develop concept level designs for the framing
attachment and reconstruction of the facade elements, the basic support
wall, foundations, bracing including the extent of repair and
alteration of the stored materials, waterproofing and protection of the
PEPCO building, code requirements, support systems and louvers. The
contractor shall provide construction documents and construction
related services. The firms must meet the following criteria in
descending order of importance: (1) direct experience working with
PEPCO on substation design and construction; (2) direct experience
working on the adjacent developmet parcel foundations on Square 407 and
adjacency issues with the PEPCO substation on this site; (3) Direct
experience in the last five years working with PADC on environmental
art projects in the Penn Quarter neighborhood; (4) direct experience
working on nationally importance historic preservation projects that
have arts elements interposed; (5) direct experience with the design
and installation of the exterior public art projects; (6) direct
structural experience with national monuments and memorial art projects
in the Washington, DC area; (7) direct experience with structural
engineering elements of historic projects of national importance; (8)
direct experience with structural engineering aspects of major exhibit
materials for both interior and exterior installations; (9) direct
experience with the structural installation of unique museum artifacts
in historic contexts and buildings; and (1) direct experience with the
structural issues dealing with national museum installations. Firms
meeting the qualifications stated and desiring to perform the services
outlined above may request in writing more information on or about May
20, 1995. All responses must be received no later than June 20, 1995 by
