Federal Aviation Administration, 800 Independence Avenue, S.W., Attn: ASU-310, Washington, D.C. 20591

A -- ALTERNATE APPROACH LIGHTING SYSTEM (AALS) DUE 063095 POC Technical Officer, Jacqueline Baldwin, 202/287-7124, Contracting Officer, Julia Frasure, 202/267-7587 The Federal Aviation Administration is currently conducting an effort to develop concepts and quantify potential benefits of deploying an alternative approach lighting system (AALS) to replace/upgrade existing aircraft precision approach and landing lighting capabilities. This is not a Request For Proposal (RFP) but a survey to locate potential sources capable of developing and demonstrating an AALS that reduces the life cycle cost of existing approach lighting systems which employ PAR 38 and PAR 56 incandescent lamp technology. The AALS will be used to provide pilots a precise three dimensional visual reference to the runway. This visual reference shall describe the aircraft's position relative to the runway centerline and threshold crossing and to the height above airfield. The AALS shall perform in reduced visibility conditions and shall have the ability to change intensity in discrete steps. The AALS may upgrade the existing incandescent lamps with new and more energy efficient light sources. The AALS may adopt existing lighting pattern configurations or may introduce new lighting pattern configurations. Potential Sources are requested to provide no more than a 10 page response to include the following: (1) Statement of Capabilities for this effort, (2) Technical approach (3) a Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) for budgeting and planning purposes, and (4) Size of company (large or small business). Any information received as a result of this announcement will not be provided to other contractors. The information requested is for planning purposes only and not a notice that a buy is in process. This annouoncement does not commit the Government to award a contract. Interested sources should respond by submitting requested information to HQ FAA/ ASU-310, ATTN: Ms Julia Frasure, 800 Independence Avenue, SW., Washington, DC 20591. (0135)
