COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 18,1995 PSA#1349National Library of Medicine, Office of Acquisitions Management,
Building 38A, Room B1N17, 8600 Rockville Pike, Bethesda MD 20894 A -- LABELING AND STRUCTURING OF ANATOMICAL IMAGE DATA OF THE VISIBLE
HUMAN PROJECT SOL RFP NLM 95-112/SLC DUE 072095 POC Sharon Cummings,
Contract Specialist; Mary Smith, Contracting Officer, 301/496-6546. The
National Library of Medicine (NLM) is seeking a contractor to perform
labeling and structuring of anatomical image data of the ''Visible
Human Project.'' New computer-based technologies and expanded broadband
networks are providing an unprecedented opportunity to supplement the
traditional image media in textbooks and radiographs. To explore these
technological opportunities in imaging the NLM has undertaken a
broadbased program named the Visible Human Project. Its objective is to
collect, process, and distribute images of the human anatomy. An
accomplishment of the Visible Human project includes the collection of
an anatomical image dataset for a human male specimen. This collection
of image data consists of axial CT, coronal and axial MRI, and color
digital cross-sectional anatomy. Each color digital cross-section
contains fiducial rods as reference points. A complementary set of
image data for a female specimen will be acquired in the fall of 1995.
The existing Visible Human male image data (15.5 gbytes) is presently
available as a collection of unlabeled images. Datasets are available
via ftp over the Internet or as 8mm and 4mm tapes. It is the goal of
the NLM to further process the visible human image data, and to support
the development of an image database to store and distribute an
enhanced dataset. The successful offeror must possess the expertise to
identify an anatomical region of image structures, represent these
structures as spatial and symbolic data, and deliver this data to NLM
in a machine-readable format. The completion of this effort shall
include the association of each identifiable structure with
nomenclature of a NLM-approved lexicon, and delivery of images of
selected body structures as surface and volume-rendered projections.
Using the digital color dataset thoracic region, the contractor shall
append labels to visible anatomical structures, segment labeled
structures, and render selected scenes from the segmented structures.
Each data structure and file format shall be delivered on an approved
magnetic media, in Unix file format compatible with the Sun SPARC. It
is anticipated that a two-year cost-reimbursement type contract will be
awarded. All responsible sources may submit a proposal which will be
considered by the agency. It is anticipated that RFP NLM 95-112/SLC
will be issued approximately 15 days after publication of this
synopsis. To receive a copy of the RFP, send a written request to the
above address. Telephone/fax requests will not be honored. (0136) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0002 19950517\A-0002.SOL)
