COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 18,1995 PSA#1349National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 1617 Cole Blvd., Golden, CO
80401 A -- LICENSE AGREEMENTS WITH ONE OR MORE U.S. COMPANIES INTERESTED IN
COMMECIALIZING STAND ALONE, PHOTOVOLTAIC POWERED ELECTROCHROMIC
WINDOWS, AND RAPID COLOR CHANGE ELECTROCHROMIC/PV SUNGLASSES Sol
Synopsis No. TT-114. Contact David Benson 303/384-6462. On behalf of
the U.S. Department of Enery, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL) anticipates negotiating one or more license agreements with
U.S. companies interested in commercializing stand alone, photovoltaic
(PV) powered electrochromic windows, and rapid color change
electrochromic/PV sunglasses. The PV powered electrochromic window
patent provides a dynamic, electronically-controlled window glazing
that can be operated so as to provide sunlight when it is needed and
reject sunlight when thermal and lighting control is required. It
includes a photovoltaic power source for switching the electrochromic
coating. Compared to liquid-crystal electrochromic windows, the
metal-oxide material used in this invention has several advantages: 1)
low DC voltage is needed to operate the switching, 2) the coating
absorbs rather than scatters light in the off position, 3) the material
changes its transmittance in a continuous manner rather than switching
from two extremes, and 4) it retains its on or off condition over 24
hours. The electrochromic/PV sunglasses can change tint in a few
seconds or less. Under conditions of bright light, a deposited solar
cell will generate a current to activate the tungsten oxide layer and
darken the glass in less than two seconds. Contact Ken Touryan
