Officer, M.W. Parker, 509/376-2029. The Department of Energy (DOE)
currently contracts for operation, through a management and operating
contractor at the Hanford Site, a ``Hanford Museums of Science and
History'' which depicts the history and mission of the Hanford Project
and features science displays that have been related to Hanford
Operations. It also offers a variety of educational programs and
special focus displays and exhibits related to such events as Black
History Month, National Engineers Week, Women's History Month, etc. The
museum attracts more than 20,000 visitors a year, many of whom are
elementary and middle school age children who visit as class groups. It
currently occupies 10,000 sq. feet. The current cost of operation is
approximately $1,000,000 per year. DOE is interested in receiving
expressions of interest from parties interested in managing and
operating a Hanford-related museum and possibly expanding its scope.
DOE also wishes to explore other funding mechanisms, including
assistance for an entity willing to participate in one or more of the
following options: (1) assume full financial and management
responsibility for a Hanford Science and History Museum, (2) manage
such a museum and share responsibility for the cost, (3) manage a
museum with funding provided by the government. Responses must be
