AND DEVELOPMENT SOURCES SOUGHT FOR THE DETECTION AND LOCATION OF
FATIGUE CRACKS IN NAVY SHIPYARD CRANE BOOM STRUCTURE AND ROTATING
SHAFTS USING ACOUSTIC EMISSION TECHNOLOGY The Navy is conducting a
market survey to identify protential sources for research and
development associated with Acoustic Emissions (AE) technology to
detect and locate fatigue cracks in large Navy shipyard cranes both in
the boom tructure, and in the rotating drive shafts for the drum
hoists and rotating gear. A typical Navy shipyard crane has a boom of
approximately 100 foot in length and is constructed as a truss system.
Demonstrated experience in the following areas is necessary; the use
of AE to detect and locate fatigue cracks in a large structures,
preferably cranes, the simulation of fatigue cracks in the laboratory
using test coupons, and the writing of test specifications for AE tests
on large structures in the field. Any prospective source should also
have the expertise in AE technology to be able to develop methods to
detect and locate fatigue cracks in rotating drive shafts given the
ambient noise level normally present in machinery, be able to
demonstrate this capability in the laboratory and in full scale on a
large portal crane, and be able to prepare written test specifications
to be used to conduct AE tests on rotating shafts in the field. In
addition, the potential source should have; demonstrated experience in
the filtering of inter- fering ambient noise from the AE signal and in
the analysis of AE signals. Any available information along with any
brochures or literature should be submitted to Maria Nailat, Code
