Representative, Susan K. Hoffman, Contracting Officer, 301-496-8603.
The National Cancer Institute, Divison of Cancer Prevention and
Control, Early Detection Branch intends to enter into negotiations with
the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is conducting a randomized
controlled trial to determine whether screening mammography is
effective in reducing breast cancer mortality among women 40 - 49 years
of age. The purpose of these negotiations is to speed the ascertainment
of cancers in the trial populations and ensure the completeness of
death information, both in support of an accelerated interim analysis
of the trial. The NCI sponsored effort is to provide information which
will guide U.S. scientific decisions regarding potential for extending
the U.K. trial concept into an international trial with more power to
obtain a definitive answer to the question of whether screening women
in their forties reduces their risk of dying of breast cancer.
