The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, 512 9th Street, Point Mugu, CA intends to issue a soliciation for the procurement of a portable singlemode/multimode fiber fusion splicer. The fusion splicer shall also be capable of splicing dispersion shifted fibers and payout singlemode fibers with a 5.5 um core. The fusion splicer will be required to provide highly reliable, low loss, high strength splices of singlemode and multimode optical fibers of silica glass. The fusion splicer must use a computer controlled method for alignment of fibers using the profile alignment system (PAS), an arc fusion splicing method, and a splicer loss estimating function. The fusion splicer shall also contain a LCD monitor, in-line proof tester, built-in or attachable printer device, optional built-in tube heater, a tool kit with replacement parts, battery pack and charger. The fusion splicer shall be able to store fiber parameter settings and shall contain an internal cleave angle alarm or warning. The fusion splicer shall be a one piece small, lightweight, and protable unit capable of being hand carried aboard without its ruggedized carrying case.
