ANNOUNCEMENT OF AVAILABILITY OF SPECIAL REPORT - EVALUATION OF FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR PRIVATE SECTOR TREATMENT OF ALPHA AND TRANSURANIC MIXED WASTES T. Wade Hillebrant, Contracting Officer, (208) 526-0547, facsimile (208) 526-5548, U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office, Procurement Services Division, MS 1221, 850 Energy Drive, Idaho Falls, ID 83401-1563. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho Operations Office (ID), oversees the operation of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). This 890 square mile site is located in the high mountain desert of Southeastern Idaho, approximately 50 miles west of the City of Idaho Falls. The INEL is a multiprogram laboratory with a primary mission to provide unique scientific and engineering capability to support the nation's nuclear energy research, nonnuclear energy research and conservation, and environmental restoration and waste management programs. A significant quantity of alpha contaminated and transuranic mixed low level waste, generated during DOE research activities, is stored at the INEL. The alpha mixed low level waste requires treatment prior to land disposal; the TRU waste requires treatment and repackaging to meet waste acceptance criteria at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in New Mexico. In 1994, DOE ID provided funding to Rust Federal Services, Inc. of Golden, Colorado; SEG - Scientific Ecology Group of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and Lockheed Environmental Systems & Technologies Co. of Pocatello, Idaho, to study cost, regulatory, technology and contractual issues associated with procuring treatment and repackaging services for this waste. A report has been published by DOE which analyzes each of the studies and recommends a path forward for DOE in procuring retrieval, assay, characterization, and treatment services for INEL transuranic and alpha contaminated mixed low level waste. This announcement notifies the public that copies of this report are available. Interested parties may request a copy by sending (mail or via facsimile) a request to the above point of contact.
