Argonne National Laboratory's Engineered Materials Central User
Facility: Opportunities exist for private industry to conduct materials
R&D at Argonne National Laboratory's newly-established Engineered
Materials Central User Facility. The level of participation in this
enterprise really depends on the needs of each individual company.
Essentially, we are inviting companies, primarily in the Midwest
region, to be involved in collaborative research projects that they
define in a dedicated laboratory/office complex established for them at
Argonne. In return, the company would be required to help the
Laboratory recover the cost of its involvement in the project. There
are many exciting advantages associated with a company's involvement in
research at the Facility. These include: access to the expertise of a
diverse array of Argonne scientists and engineers, the ready
availability of a number of unique user facilities and diagnostic tools
without having to make the capital expenditures for them, the
availability of an array of science and engineering libraries, access
to advanced high-speed computers, and the natural synergism that arises
from having all of the above. Principal among the criteria for choosing
projects is that a company has a materials R&D need that is related to
an existing materials science and technology program at Argonne,
requires a material or method developed at the Laboratory, or requires
special equipment and expert support personnel available at Argonne,
or can be solved in collaboration with Argonne staff. It is also
required that this program be conducted in a manner consistent with
normal Argonne procedures. For a company not yet ready to conduct
research as a Participating Member of the Central User Facility as
described above, but who wishes to be involved in this enterprise, we
are developing an annual conference series that will introduce the
company to the diverse collection of materials R&D capabilities
available at Argonne. This conference series, held throughout the year,
will provide an array of opportunities to the company through
workshops, technical and social events, and a variety of programs. An
annual registration fee will be required for participation ;in this
mutually enriching program at Argonne. For further information please
