Research Laboratory intends to negotiate on an other than full and open
competitive basis with Amherst International Inc. for a Ericsson
Business Networks AB FSU 925 RTC Fusion Splicer with Erbium Software
upgrade. The Ericsson FSU 925 RTC Fusion Splicer with Erbium upgrade is
the only optical fiber splicer available which actively monitors the
fiber's optical mode fields during the act fusion splicig and adjusts
the arc's temperature and duration to taper the two modes such that
they match each other at the splice interface. (This is achieved by
diffusing the fiber dopant into cladding layer through heating of the
fiber.) Amherst International Inc. is the only known manufacturer who
can use this Patent pending process. The anticipated award date is 46
