R -- CO-SPONSORSHIP OF THE 1998 INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION GENERAL MEETING IN HOUSTON, TEXAS SOL 52SBNB5C8812 DUE 090195 POC Debra Hoffman (301) 975-4648/C.O Pauline Mallgrave (301) 975-6330 The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, MD intends to negotiate with the United States National Committee (USNC) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on a sole-source basis to co-sponsor the 1998 (IEC) General Meeting in Houston, Texas in October 1998. Pursuant to 41 USC 253(c)(1), the USNC of the IEC is the only responsible source that can satisfy the Government's requirement. The General Meeting will reaffirm a strong U.S. and Government commitment to international standardization as an anchor of free trade, create a climate of international cooperation, and bring together high-level engineering, industrial, and scientific experts from all over the world. This is the first time in 25 years that the United States has been able to host the General Meeting. NIST has been a key contributor to the technical work of the IEC and the U.S. National Committee of the IEC and co- sponsorship of this meeting will reaffirm its commitment.
