STUDIES OF WAVES IN THE UPPER OCEAN SOL NRMGL000500729 DUE 073195 POC
Fran Starck, (303) 497-5326 A -- Provide expertise in the field of wave
tank studies and laboratory modelling and theoretical studies of waves
in the upper ocean. The series of experimental and theoretical works
intended are to study the interaction between waves, currents, and
turbulence and their manifestations on the surface. Specifically (1)
Transformation of the surface wave on a 2-D nonuniform current. The
time evolution of surface anomalies in the dipole field will be
analyzed for various frequencies of surface wave; (2) Investigation of
internal wave generation by stratified shear flows around bodies with
critical layers (C) where the phase velocity of waves coincide with
the shear flow velocity. Effect of the C on the wave drag force will be
calculated; (3) Modulation of the growth rate of short capillary
gravity surface waves by long waves in the presence of turbulent wind.
The influence of this effect on the modulation of the short surface
wave spectrum will be estimated; (4) Scattering of surface waves at a
body moving with constant velocity under the fluid surface. Resonance
effects connected with the coincidence of the group velocity of the
scattered wave with the velocity of the body will be analyzed; (5) The
propagation of short trains of intense surface waves in deep water
will be studied experimentally in the large thermostratified tank. The
evolution of abrupt changes of the surface wave intensity for various
wave amplitudes will be analyzed. The experimental data will be
compared with the results of the theoretical calculations; (6)
Investigation of surface gravity wave interactions. The values of no
linear additions to the wave phase velocity occurring due to the
self-action and interaction of wave pairs propagating in the opposite
direction will be measured. The experimental data will be compared to
the calculation results; (7) Investigation of surface wave
transformation on a 2-D non-uniform current in the tank; (8)
Investigation of finite-amplitude gravity-capillary wave curvature in
the wind-wave oval tank. The distribution functions of crest and trough
curvatures of short, small- amplitude gravity waves will be obtained.
The transformation of the curvature distribution functions on the
profile of steep gravity wave will be studied; and (9) Surface wave
(SW) damping on turbulence. The amplitude changes of the SW generated
by a wavemaker after passing a turbulent layer produced by an
oscillating grid located under the surface will be measured. The
Institute of Applied Physics (IAP), Nizhni Novgorod Russia is
considered to be the only known qualified source to supply the studies.
In the absence of other qualified sources, it is the intent of the
Government to award a sole source contract under the authority of 41
U.S.C.253(c)(1) for this service. This is not a formal solicitation.
Interested firms and/or individuals may request to receive a copy of
the solicitation when/if it becomes available. This notice may
represent the only official notice of such a solicitation. (0199) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0012 19950719\A-0012.SOL)
