Corps anticipates a need for qualified individuals (not organizations
or companies) to serve as medical contractors in several countries of
the former Soviet Union, Eastern European, African, Asian and Pacific
areas. Personal Services Contracts in specific countries are contingent
upon requests for Peace Corps assistance from those countries.
Interested individuals should respond to this notice, as no further
notice may be placed. The Peace Corps medical contractors are
responsible for providing medical care for Peace Corps Trainees,
Volunteers, and at some posts, U.S. Government employees, as well as
the development of a comprehensive health care program. The following
competencies are considered essential: good clinical skills; knowledge
of endemic diseases and health hazards in developing countries; proven
counseling ability, especially in a cross-cultural setting; and
experience in health training/education. Posts have specific
requirements for minimum certification as Registered Nurses or Nurse
Practitioners/Physician's Assistants. Physicians may be given
preference. Traveling within country will be required, and short-term
travel to neighboring countries and the U.S. may be required. The
contractor will be required to respond to medical emergencies on a
twenty-four hour-a-day basis. Some personal hardship and lack of modern
conveniences should be expected. The contracts generally will be for a
minimum of two years, with two one-year options to extend. Housing and
transportation will be provided. The successful candidates will need a
