COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 28,1995 PSA#1398Westinghouse Hanford Company, David C. Ramsower, MSIN H5-61, P.O. Box
1970, Richland, WA 99352 44 -- HANFORD RESERVATION SINGLE-SHELL STORAGE TANK RADIOACTIVE WASTE
RETRIEVAL Contact David C. Ramsower, H5-61, (509)376-5602.
Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) is seeking organizations with
commercially available equipment engineered concepts, systems or
services for retrieving radioactive hazardous waste from underground
single-shell tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hanford
nuclear storage site near Richland, Washington. There are 133
single-shell tanks (SSTs) that range from 1900 cubic meter (500,000
gallon) capacity to 3800 cubic meter (1 million galon) capacity and
contain hazardous radioactive and chemical waste in the form of ``salt
cake''; sludge; hard pan or ``heel'' at the bottom of the tanks; and
liquids. The waste forms are present in various proportions in each
tank. The tanks contain a variety of in-tank hardware in the form of
pumps, thermocouple trees and other miscellaneous items. There is
limited access through the top of the tanks into their interior. The
major retrieval tasks involve waste mobilization; conveyance of waste
out of the tank; waste conditioning for transport; and waste
transfer/transport to another storage or treatment facility. Examples
of the type of equipment for waste retrieval include but are not
limited to pumping equipment, hydraulic mining equipment, tank cleaning
equipment, and remote handling equipment. The objective of this program
is to determine from industry their best approaches to retrieving waste
utilizing commercially available and adaptable
equipment/systems/services that perform some or all of the retrieval
tasks. Initially the program will include a comprehensive review and
categorization of equipment/systems/services. Further review through
simulations, modeling, demonstration testing or other techniques may be
necessary if the result would be a significant reduction in cost or
risk over the current baseline technology of past practice sluicing.
Future work may involve integrating various retrieval equipment
components into systems or integration of systems/sevices for specific
retrieval projects. Interested parties are invited to submit an
expression of interest in providing information about their product(s)
or services. An information package on the specifics of the tanks,
waste characteristics, additional response guidelines and related data
is available upon request to WHC. Expressions of interest (on company
letterhead) should be mailed to: Westinghouse Handford Company, P.O.
Box 1870, Richalnd, WA 99352, Attn: Tank Retrieval Team, MSIN H5-61 or
FAXed to Tank Retrieval Team at (509) 372-0065 or sent via the
internet to tank_retrieval_team@rl.gov. Responses to this request for
expressions of interest will be accepted through July 1995. WHC is
seeking this information for planning purposes and will not compensate
any organizatioin for responding to this announcement. Questions on
this announcement should be addressed to: David C. Ramsower,
Acquisition Engineer; Larry McDaniel, Task Lead; or Jim Yount,
Technical Lead on (509) 376-5602. (206) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0407 19950727\44-0004.SOL)
