The General Services Administration, Information Technology Service, is seeking information about telecommunications services being offered by the new ''alternate'' or ``competitive'' local exchange carriers. Information is requested about the availability of dial tone and message unit (local access) lines, DID and DOD trunks, Centrex-like and other value-added services. Responses should include information about the specific geographic locations and services available. The presence of competition in the market for local exchange services is creating an opportunity for GSA to potentially realize savings in the procurement of these services and to have local exhange services packaged with other services and equipment to create new programs and services for GSA's customers. GSA is in the process of establishing pilot projects to acquire services from the ``alternate'' or ``competitive'' local exchange carriers. The purpose of the pilot projects is to gather information about this new class of local exchange carriers and to gain experience in doing business with them. In addition, the pilot projects will allow the new ``alternate'' or ``competitive'' local exchange carriers to learn how to do business with GSA.
