The USDA, Agricultural Research Service in Phoenix, Arizona, has a requirement for the purchase of a magnetic sector mass spectrometer system capable of separation of carbon and nitrogen isotopes. It must be able to detect masses of 44, 45 and 46 for carbon and masses of 28, 29 and 30 for nitrogen. The mass spectrometer must be capable of being interfaced to a Carlo Erba NA-1500 carbon and nitrogen analyzer. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes are to be analyzed in the same sample. The system must be capable of operation under continuous flow conditions. The computer controlling the system must be an industry standard such as DOS, OS/2 UNIX or Apple. Samples to be analyzed will have C:N rations up to 30. The sensitivity of the system should be 1 in 1100 molecules of carbon dioxide at a pressure in the range of 10E-6 mbars.
