Animal Care Facility at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA. This
synopsis is for information and planning purposes only. This is not a
request for proposals. Interested firms are invited to respond by
August 29, 1995, in writing to Wanda L. Snyder, Contract Specialist,
M/S 241-1, Moffett Field, CA 94035-1000 with information con cerning
any company qualifications and capabilities to perform the described
work. The Animal Care Facility consists of approximately 25,000 square
feet of animal holding space com prising about 45 rooms. In addition,
approximately 8,000 square feet of ancillary rooms are available.
Responses requested from companies capable of providing the following
services: Animal husbandry and maintenance, including the cleaning of
cages and equipment; maintaining the various records relevant to all
aspects of animal care; transportation of animals; medical care of
animals; surgical services; clinical testing; post-mortem examinations;
assistance in the procurement of animals and supplies. This facility is
accredited by the American Associa tion for the Accreditation of
Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). The species accommodated include
non-human primates, rats, mice, frogs, and non-poisonous snakes.
Occassionally, other species have also been present in small numbers.
The animal care facility is operated seven days a week, including
holidays. In addition, the Ames Research Center will conduct life
sciences flight experiments which consist of using numerous biological
specimens aboard spacecraft to conduct research during space flight
and supporting activities. Specimens used in support of these
activities will be maintained at Ames Research Center Animal Care
Facility. During shuttle missions, specimens will also be housed at
Kennedy Space Center, Fl. Care of the animals at KSC may be the
responsibility of the Ames Research Center Animal Care Facility
contractor. Other centers may be used for retrieval of animals upon
postflight recovery of the spacecraft. The contemplated contract will
require approxi mately 15 manyears of effort which include: One (1)
clinical veterinarian who must be graduate of a school of veterinary
medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association; one
Operation Supervisor who must be a technologist certified by the
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or candidate
for same; three animal health technicians (California State
Certified); and two primate trainers who must be either a technologist
or technician certified by AALAS or a candidate or same. It is antici
pated that the period of performance would not exceed five years. The
standard industrial code is 8731. Include in your response whether
your concern is large, small, or small disadvantaged business. See Note
25. All responsible sources may submit their written
qualifications/capabilities which shall be considered by the Agency.
